Amazing Online Talent Contest on a Sunday Evening

Amazing Online Talent Contest on a Sunday Evening

Everyone’s lifestyle has been affected in the last few months due to the pandemic. I, being a Waldorf Teacher, find it very challenging to take online classes as opposed to meeting the children on a frequent basis. If our kids are concerned, they know the situation very well and I appreciate them for being so understanding. They keep asking me about when can we meet up etc. However, we all need to accept the situation around sooner or later. And my kids have done it too.

Now that Masumi and I( we teach the same class) take online classes throughout the week, the kids also keep arranging online meets amongst themselves every Sunday, where they have games and spend a good time with each other. To make things more interesting, one girl in my class thought why not organize an ‘Online Talent Contest’ where all the children and their parents participate as well. After a few days, she managed to get 11 children and 14 parents on board. How exciting is that! The only rule here was to make everything handmade and original.

However, we had the most difficult job to do – Judge! Everyone was so talented in their own niche that it was actually impossible to choose the best ones.  I told Masumi that why don’t we make things more interesting so that the focus shifts from the competition. I suggested to write a few lines about the person who will participate so that everyone has fun and feels special. Masumi thought further and said, “Maybe we can have few lines and make them guess about whom we have written, and then that participant can showcase their talent.” So things went on a roll and we had our own little fun time thinking creatively about all of them. After expending so many creative juices, we felt like giving ourselves a Poetess Award. I can share what we wrote for one kid i.e.

 – “Mehnat karne se nahi katrati, chaho toh aazma lo tum,
Madat ka haath hamesha badhati
Kaam ho bada ya ho kum
Bolo Kaun?

We had amazing talents like Singing with instruments, Dancing, Pencil Sketching, Drawing, Painting, Clay work, Doll Quilling, Storytelling, Yoga poses, Recorder/Piano playing and so much more!!

Our call started at 4 pm and we thought we might wind up by 5:45pm. Who knew we would be engaged for 3 hours full of entertainment and fun. Our kids still wanted to know who was the winner. So we told them that it wasn’t fair to have the best but we can try to give awards in a certain manner. Hesitantly, they agreed.

So, in 10 minutes, we decided to have a special award category for each one of them. As we knew from where each one is coming from, with respect to their participation and talents, we decided the Award names accordingly. We didn’t expect some of them to participate but they did, some of them showed talents which they had just started during the lockdown and some of them showed their talents for the first time to us which we longed to see before. We had one parent who was hesitant to join until she saw all the performances and asked me if even she could participate too. This really shows how much of positivity was there at our little fun event.

So we had Awards like: One Man Army Award, Out of the Shadows Award, Breakaway Artist Award etc. Everyone loved this idea. It was so sweet of them to acknowledge our efforts and give both of us ‘Fast Thinkers Award’ !

I am sharing all the talents which I can over here. It is just amazing to see such a unique bond amongst each other.

Even during the pandemic, we tried to make this a fun evening and not crib about the negative stuff happening around. Most of the parents expressed that they laughed after a long time since the lockdown had started. So, we can say that we did have an Amazing Online Talent Contest.
